08-21-1944:
The Collaborator's Punishment
“At 0830 hrs we crossed the Siene River
at Rosity on the West bank and Guernes
on the East. We crossed on a pontoon bridge the engineers
had built. There was some enemy air activity, but our anti-aircraft
fire held them off. We proceeded upriver and made camp near
Dennenton.
As the executive officer of the Battalion, I was usually
the last man to leave the old position when on the offense.
So it was today. As I crossed, at the East end of the bridge,
a crowd of people was in the process of cutting a woman’s
hair and stripping her of her clothes. This was her punishment
for fraternizing with the Germans during the occupation
period. The Germans had left rather suddenly. The mayor
of the town was a German appointee and had been killed by
the townspeople.”
