11-26-1944: A Pile of Rubble

“German aircraft quite active, 52 sorties in one day. My first experience with jet planes.

The planes were few, and not too effective, but annoying as hell.
One well-placed bomb struck the front of the house that was the 314th Regimental Command Post. The CP was located in the back, opposite end. It was the habit of the C.O. of the 314th to locate the CP in the end of the building away from the enemy’s direction. I had just arrived at the CP and proceeded to the operations room. We felt the house shudder. Plaster from the ceiling and walls rained down. As we went to leave the house, we noticed that the front half of the building was a pile of rubble. I had just left this part of the house before the bomb hit.

The Regiment received orders to reconnoiter a new position. This meant new action was in the offing for CT-4.”
